About us
Outside the lines was established in 2003 by Holly Steele, a Head of Art in an independent school in Wimbledon. It was an answer to the increasing demand for a quality class for beginner artists who wanted to take part in art making but were art terrified or had experienced negative creative experiences in the past. It is unique in that it approaches the subject with a lightness, and non-conformist approach to acquiring art making skills and techniques. It allows students to regain or discover a side to them, which has previously been neglected.
Each student is encouraged to discover their unique artistic potential and to face the challenge of starting afresh with no preconceived ideas or notions of what art is or should look like. Rather, students ‘stumble’ upon technique in a non-judgmental, warm and fun environment. The results often match if not surpass the skills taught in more prescriptive, conventional art classes being offered. As the pressure to perform is lifted, students are able to work at their own pace and discover their own style in their own time.
Class sizes are ideally kept small to allow for as much or as little personal attention as each student requires. Students are guided step by step in the early stages but are soon able to work independently and surprise even themselves at what they are able to achieve.
New courses begin every half term lasting 6/7 weeks and follow local school term times. At just £150/ course including all materials, equipment and refreshments, as well as a complimentary drawing/art kit and sketchbook, this is excellent value for money.
Class meets on a Monday evening from 8pm to 10pm in The Lingfield Room, at The Wimbledon Village Hall, 26 Lingfield Road, Wimbledon Village, SW19
